Alternative Medicine - A Viable Option? As the pressures of modern life continue to increase for many persons, the desire to return to uncomplicated means of maintaining good health has become important for a number of people. The practice and administration of alternative medicine has gained a lot of recognition in recent years. But what is alternative medicine, and how is it supposed to work. Essentially, alternative medicine involves the use of natural herbs and vitamins, sometimes in formulas or taken individually, to treat illness and maintain health. While not regulated and enforced by a central authority (such as traditional medicine is regulated by the American Medical Association), there are a growing number of homeopathic physicians that use these combinations of herbs and vitamins to treat their patients. Along with vitamin supplements and herbs, a practitioner of alternative medicine may also employ such methods as diet plans that include foods rich in the nutrients needed to address and correct various ailments. At times, a homeopathic physician may also be a licensed practitioner of tradition medicine and treat his or her patient with a combination of synthetic drugs as well as natural substances. Just as with traditional medicine, there is a danger to choosing to treat oneself without consulting a physician who practices alternative medicine. Various herbal combinations cannot be coupled with certain vitamin preparations, as some will simply cancel out the other; or even worse, the combinations may prove to be toxic. Before beginning the use of any alternative medicine, it is imperative that you have a thorough checkup and discuss with your healthcare professional what you should and should not be taking. If you are interested in augmenting or replacing your current healthcare regimen with alternative medicine, seek out and make an appointment with a homeopathic physician. Make sure to take along documents that outline your medical history. If you are currently taking any prescription medications, take them with you. In like manner, provide information about any vitamin supplements or herbal combinations you are currently taking, including how long you have been taking each one. You may find that you are wasting time and money on the selections you have made. Check your local phone book for contact information on local homeopathic healthcare experts, or use the Internet to find one relatively near you. While alternative medicine is not the answer for everyone, it may be a good choice for you. Partners
